A Whole Mess of Stuff

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

I know I haven’t blogged in a while and I apologize for that. I’ve been busy streaming my commissions live and “working for the man” as one of my coworkers likes to put it. Things have been both dull and crazy around here - the juxtaposition that makes you want to crash into bed when you come home.

I’m going to blog and post artwork through this post. I know it’s a mess; just try to stay with me.

Here are some commissions I streamed live. Others I’m still waiting on payment for, so I’ll post those as soon as I can. I’m hoping to rid myself of all commissions by Thursday, but I feel like I said that last week and the week before. Granted, I ended up with a few more commissions on me this week and it’s not like I would want the commission stream to end. I just know that there are some commissioners that have been waiting weeks (or months, in the case of one oil painting) for their work. I’m trying so hard to drudge through though.

And I have learned that landscapes just aren’t my forte. I’m okay at them - I just don’t like them. That’s okay! That’s part of the learning process.

For six years, I’ve wanted to draw a hulk - just to color someone’s face something other than peach or brown. And, as fate would have it, Saturday I got my wish! Thank goodness too, because Saturday sucked.

I drew this out of a magazine that one of my coworkers had. It only had Daniel Radcliff’s picture in it, but I elaborated on the bodies. This sold today, so I was rather proud. I’ll have to do another one to replace it.

Unfortunately, it’s been terribly, terribly slow during the week, and even on some of the weekends. I try hard to keep myself out front and hustling, but on the ridiculously slow days, I will admit to doodling on a half piece of paper. I’ve been waiting to collect enough of these to post. These are some I’ve done over the past month.

Here’s a really cruddy sketch of Oriella. Not sure why I’m sharing this.

Here’s one of Oriella and Asher. I don’t draw a lot of happy pictures of them - mostly because these two are the most unhappily love struck of the story. Sad ending to them too, but I won’t spoil it.

One really hot day, I was dabbling around at the caricature stand trying to keep myself cool when a body artist pointed out this woman to me. “She looks like a frog!” I’m pretty sure that when she burps or hiccups, she looks like the left.

Left to right: Myself, my husband, our friend and possible roommate, my dog, Kim, Nate and Ryan (coworkers), and Mike (my boss).

I’ve been wanting to start a comic of my coworkers and I and the crazy stuff we face - from melting in the midway to creeping out three year olds to dying at the stand waiting for a drawing. I’d also like to do a bit of home life, like my husband’s zombie car and George, the carpenter bee door guard. I just haven’t gotten around to that yet.

Well I think that’s all for me. Enjoy the drawings!

Slow Day. Caricatures and Commission

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

To start this post, I’d like to show you a few shots from this evening at around 8:30.

Kind of frightening, isn’t it? It didn’t rain during my shift today, and was mild in weather. The park shouldn’t look this empty on a Friday night! Perhaps I picked the wrong year to start my art blog?

Sometimes seasons like these are really discouraging. I’m trying to keep my head up, but looking at my budget and bills for this year, it’s hard.

It’s no surprise that I only did three sketches today. Here are those three:

I wasn’t really feeling it today, but honestly, with the park being so empty, I don’t think any of us were.

Here’s something I tried to keep myself busy with today:

If you’ve heard all the little girls screaming about Twilight, you’ll know why I demeaned myself to produce this piece. I think it’ll pop off the walls and put money in the register faster than that teenager can say “I love Edward!” And yes, the image beside shows the glitter that you’ll find spread across the mirror in the image and around Edward.

It’s kind of hard not to draw Robert Pattinson without adding sparkles and rainbows.

In the mean time, to make ends meet, I’ve been taking commissions. Here’s one of my most recent finished pieces along with a progress image.

My favorite part of this piece is something you can’t see in those images, so I’ll post that part here:

So many details you miss.

After that massive image dump, I think I’ll leave you with that. Best wishes!

Trying Something New

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

For the past few weeks, I’ve been suffering major burnout. It’s not really artistic of nature; it has everything to do with the lack of pay and the lack of business. I put in for this past Monday off to clear my head and, during my time away from the park, I decided to try some new methods with my caricatures. Here are the products from today. Hope you like them!

Here was a demo from this morning. Eh. Wasn’t feeling it. It was, however, 95 and very humid today, so that might be why.

I like this one. Not as pushed as I’d like it to be, but the likeness is there and I love her piercings!

Here’s another demo. She’ll be dropping by the site shortly to pass the photo along to her friends. :)

When this kid turned his head to the side, his cranium shot out. It was crazy. Made for a great caricature.

What I did was change up my coloring methods. I’ve been applying a light shading of dark brown, pink and burgundy under the skin. I’ve also decided to stop doing the lined highlights on the eyes and have opted for paint pens to make them. I took tips from Sean Gardner and grabbed Woodcraft paint pens. I have an Avery correction pen on order, and when I get a chance to use it, I’ll let you know.

Due to the heat and the lack of customers today, I was sent home early - just in time to catch my husband heading out the door for school and to find these on the table:

When I was fifteen, my husband had gotten me a set of 48 prismacolor pencils for my birthday. I had just recently finished nearly all of them up and decided to reorder. I paid $13.02 for the pencils (plus $7.50 in shipping, geez!) and $10.30 plus $4.74 shipping for the art stix. All together, $35.56. I didn’t think that was all too bad considering that all the stores around here that sell the art stix charge $49.99 for the same set I bought. I don’t even want to know their price for the pencils.

I found these deals on amazon.com. I thought I might pass that along to anyone reading this because of how empty wallets are these days. If you might know where to find them even cheaper, let me know and I’ll pass the tip along!

For some reason, the orange is ridiculously longer than the rest of the sticks. Apparently I’ll be using a lot of orange?

Edit: No, they did not arrive in rainbow order; I rearranged them myself. Can anyone say OCD?
